LTL works through a network of grouped cargo and scheduled handling. Freight needs to be clearly labelled, appropriately packed and accurately measured.
Measure the space that matters
Ask how many terminals or transfers are expected and whether fragile or high-value cargo needs special handling.
Inspect what is and is not included
Transit estimates may follow network departures rather than a direct truck schedule. Check the collection cut-off and delivery service level.
Prepare shipment identification
Confirm the treatment of oversized items, tail-lift deliveries, residential access or appointments before accepting a rate.
Questions worth checking
- Correct gross dimensions for every handling unit
- Stackable status specified
- Packaging suitable for multiple handling points
- Delivery conditions and appointment requirements recorded
Groupage is about compatible cargo and handling
A few cartons or pallets can share a truck with other consignments. Compare pallet count and loading metres, but also establish whether cargo can be stacked and whether multiple depot handovers are acceptable.
Request a clear declared goods value, liability terms, packaging standard, collection window and estimated number of handovers. Hazardous, overlength or temperature-controlled goods may not suit ordinary groupage.
