A freight enquiry a carrier can actually price

The quickest way to get a useful quote is to describe the real pickup, real delivery point and the cargo as it will be handed over.

Reference notes for day-to-day freight decisions.

International freight logistics

Send the actual door addresses, cargo-ready date, commodity description, outer dimensions, gross weight and handling instructions together. A quotation based on guesses is likely to change when the shipment is ready.

01 / 05

Define both endpoints

Give country and city, and where possible the postal code, port, airport or exact site. “Near the capital” may conceal a long inland collection leg or a difficult last-mile delivery.

02 / 05

Describe the packed goods

Share the commodity, number of units, outer dimensions, gross weight, stackability and any dangerous-goods, temperature or handling requirements. For unusual cargo, photographs and drawings save several rounds of questions.

03 / 05

Tell the provider the timing

Provide cargo-ready date, acceptable pickup window, arrival deadline and whether dates are flexible. If no firm arrival deadline exists, explain that: it can expand routing choices.

04 / 05

Make quote comparison possible

Request currency, rate validity, chosen mode, service scope, included terminal charges, customs scope, free-time conditions and insurance options. A vague flat rate is difficult to compare with a transparent quotation.

05 / 05

Choose a single commercial contact

Identify the person able to approve changes and provide the information needed for customs. Accurate contact details can prevent days of avoidable delay.

Use one data set for every quote request

When three providers price the same movement, share identical packed dimensions, delivery postcode, ready date and Incoterms® scope. Ask each provider to list excluded charges, booking validity and responsibility for customs so the rates can be compared on equal terms.

This is an illustrative planning example, not a current quotation, legal instruction or promise of transport capacity. Confirm shipment-specific requirements with the responsible carrier, broker or regulator.

Use this on the next shipment.

Use the checks in this guide alongside the actual booking instructions. Send the actual door addresses, cargo-ready date, commodity description, outer dimensions, gross weight and handling instructions together. A quotation based on guesses is likely to change when the shipment is ready.
