Verified Gross Mass: before the container is loaded

For applicable packed export containers, the verified gross mass must be available before vessel loading. Build the weighing and declaration step into the plan.

International freight logistics

Agree who will obtain the weight, which approved method will be used and how the figure reaches the carrier before the cut-off. An estimate of the cargo alone is not the verified mass of the packed container.

The requirement

Under SOLAS, a packed container’s verified gross mass is a condition for loading onto an applicable ship. The shipper is responsible for providing the VGM to the carrier and terminal representative in time for the stowage plan.

02 / 04

Two permitted approaches

One method weighs the packed container using suitable certified equipment. Another calculates the total of cargo, pallets, packaging and securing materials and adds container tare, using an approved procedure where required.

03 / 04

Do not mix gross cargo weight with VGM

Gross cargo weight does not include the empty container tare; VGM does. The difference matters, particularly where payload and road mass limits are tight.

Operational checklist

Agree who provides the VGM, its format, deadline and the method used. Confirm local verification arrangements and retain supporting records.

VGM is a measured container mass, not a guess

A booked export container needs the verified gross mass in the required format and by the nominated deadline. Determine who weighs the packed container, how the terminal receives the result and who resolves any discrepancy before gate-in.

This is an illustrative planning example, not a current quotation, legal instruction or promise of transport capacity. Confirm shipment-specific requirements with the responsible carrier, broker or regulator.
