FCL or LCL? Compare the whole journey

A shared container can suit a small shipment; a dedicated container can reduce handling. Look beyond the ocean freight rate to the charges and time at both ends.

International freight logistics

Compare the full cost from collection to final release, including origin and destination handling. For sensitive or bulky cargo, the reduction in handling may justify a dedicated container even when it is not filled.

01 / 04

What you are purchasing

FCL means a container is booked for the cargo. LCL means cargo shares container space under a consolidation service. Neither automatically guarantees faster customs clearance or a more favourable landed cost.

02 / 04

Volume is only the starting point

Low-volume shipments often suit LCL but charges can include receiving, consolidation, deconsolidation and destination release. FCL introduces container-related costs, inland drayage and free-time exposure.

03 / 04

Consider cargo handling

If goods are fragile, high value or need special stowage, a dedicated container may reduce handling. For well-packed standard goods, LCL offers flexibility and avoids waiting to accumulate a full container.

04 / 04

Ask for two landed quotations

At the point where cost difference narrows, get FCL and LCL quotations showing all origin and destination charges and realistic door-to-door times. Compare the total.

Compare handling risk as well as price

Eight pallets for a consignee in the Netherlands may not fill a container, but an LCL quote with origin/destination handling can approach an FCL alternative for fragile or awkward cargo. Use realistic volume, weight and total landed charges for comparison.

This is an illustrative planning example, not a current quotation, legal instruction or promise of transport capacity. Confirm shipment-specific requirements with the responsible carrier, broker or regulator.
